Two things we know for sure: our social and environmental welfare is deterioratiing and greedy capitalists have had a lot to do with it. So why Rescue Capitalism?
Well, the depletion of our natural resources, climate catastrophes and the shredding of our social fabric have resulted from an intentional policy experiment called supply-side economics that has prevailed in American since Ronald Reagan's "revolution". It wasn't capitalism - the economic philosophy. It was real live people scheming to gain wealth and power. The government has been demonized; taxes lowered on corporations and the rich; regulations that protected the environment and promoted compeitive markets were gutted. And the rich have gotten obscenely richer.
It doesn't have to be that way. Since 1777, Vermont has preserved a democratic capitalism that values communities and the biosphere as much as it values profits. This is a book about Vermont's unique busiiness ethic.
But wait, there's more. Facing environmental and social collapse, we desperately need to rescue capitalism from the supply-siders that hi-jacked it because it is the only institution left with the scale, agility and motivation to reverse the that collapse. And tiny Vermont can show the way.
My book, Rescueing Capitalism, we be published this spring. Subscribe to this blog and we'll let you know when it's available.
